Proud's Story
During a fourth-grade school field trip to Khao Yai National Park, Yanin (Proud) Tangkaravakoon witnessed hornbills for the first time. Proud's interest in hornbills began after learning about the migratory birds' vital role as seed dispersers, promoting the forest's biodiversity and growth. After learning that hornbill populations were declining due to deforestation and human activity years later, in 2024, Proud realized the urgency to protect these birds. In March 2024, she returned to the forest under the guidance of Ms. Siriwan Nakkuntod from the Thailand Hornbill Research Foundation. There, she witnessed firsthand the critical need for more nesting sites. This transformative experience inspired her to launch Homes for Hornbills, a project devoted to developing artificial nests that protect these birds and sustain the forests they help flourish.

Pearl's Story
Pearl participated in a workshop where she learned to repurpose PET plastic and proposed using plastic waste as the polymer component of the nests. She learned their ways of upcycling plastic to create usable household items such as coasters and dining mats and realized how waste can be recycled in many other ways and sparked a passion for the environment in her.
As a child, Proud and Pearl would regularly visit her grandparents’ home and always admire the hornbill painting. While Proud’s field trip to the Khao Yai National Park inspired her to initiate Homes for Hornbills, the hornbill painting at her grandparents’ house reminded them to help conserve these hornbills. Just as paintings preserve the image of a hornbill forever, Homes for Hornbills preserves these birds in their natural habitat.
