Young Hornbill Guardians
Homes for Hornbills believes raising awareness is essential to conservation. We are co-leading a program with the Thailand Hornbill Research Foundation, local community members, and school teachers called Young Hornbill Guardians. This program inspires, raises awareness, and fosters sustained conservation within the community. We help plan, organize, create lessons, and educate these students. This program has already successfully educated over 310 students at Baan Nam Chued School, Baan Rim Talay School, Baan Tha Khao School, and Koh Yao School.
By the end of the program, students learn hornbill ecology, hornbill life cycles, the importance of artificial nests, and the role they can play in conservation. Within these lessons, community members and hornbill researchers are invited to share their experiences and stories, empowering the younger generation.
Children’s Storybook Activity
Students worked collaboratively in groups of 3-4 to plan, write, draw, and color their very own children’s storybook about hornbills. Afterward, each group shared their stories with their peers.
Batik Painting
Students worked alongside local batik artists to create a collaborative hornbill mural at their school. Through this traditional art form, they celebrated Yao Noi’s cultural heritage while expressing what they learned about hornbills and their forest habitat.
Planting Native Species
Students planted 200+ native plant species that provide food for hornbills. This activity introduced students to the connection between plants, forest restoration, and wildlife.
Nature Photography Challenge
Students used disposable cameras to capture the relationship between people and nature around their school. By photographing plants, wildlife, and moments of connection, they practiced observing their surroundings and telling stories about why nature matters.
